Quick Answer
If you want flexible firepower and a combined-arms force, the Rifle & Command Lances ForcePack is your pick. If you prefer iconic BattleMechs with a storied unit history, the Gray Death Legion Heavy Battle Lance delivers. Choose based on whether your tabletop needs emphasize vehicles or 'Mechs.
When you're building an Inner Sphere force, the choice between vehicle lances and BattleMech lances shapes your tactics. The Rifle & Command Lances ForcePack offers a mix of tanks designed for direct fire and command support, while the Gray Death Legion Heavy Battle Lance brings four iconic 'Mechs with a legendary background.
Both ForcePacks give you a solid foundation, but they serve different roles on the tabletop. Let's break down what each box contains and how to decide which one fits your next battle.
Rifle & Command Lances: Combined Arms Flexibility
The Rifle & Command Lances ForcePack includes two Hetzer Wheeled Assault Guns, two Bulldog Medium Tanks, two Sturmfeur Heavy Tanks, and two Von Luckner Heavy Tanks. This mix gives you a versatile armored force: Rifle vehicles deliver firepower at any range to ensure flexibility on any battlefield, while command vehicles bring protection, firepower, and presence that can seize victory from defeat.
With eight vehicles, you can field a substantial armor company or split them into two lances. The variety lets you experiment with different tactics, from hit-and-run to holding a defensive line. If you enjoy combined-arms play and want to add armor to your Inner Sphere forces, this box is a strong choice.
- Ideal for players who want to expand beyond BattleMechs and try vehicle tactics.
- Great value for building a combined-arms force without buying multiple separate packs.
Gray Death Legion Heavy Battle Lance: Iconic 'Mechs with a Story
The Gray Death Legion Heavy Battle Lance includes the Shadow Hawk, Catapult, Gargoyle, and Regent. Originally an ad hoc militia unit scraped together by Grayson Death Carlyle, this elite unit became known for effective use of combined arms tactics. The Heavy Battle Lance is ready for action.
These 'Mechs offer a mix of mobility, firepower, and durability. The Shadow Hawk and Catapult are classic Inner Sphere designs, while the Gargoyle (a Clan omnimech) and Regent (a later-era design) add variety. If you're a fan of the Gray Death Legion lore or want a lance that tells a story, this pack delivers.
- Perfect for players who prefer BattleMechs and want a cohesive, lore-rich lance.
- Includes a mix of classic and newer designs, suitable for various eras.
Tradeoffs to Consider
- Vehicle vs. 'Mech Focus: The Rifle & Command Lances pack is all about vehicles, offering combined-arms flexibility. The Gray Death Legion pack is pure 'Mechs, giving you a traditional lance. If you already have plenty of 'Mechs, vehicles add variety; if you need 'Mechs, the latter fills that gap. Assess your current collection to see which gap you need to fill.
- Unit Count and Cost: The Rifle & Command Lances pack includes eight vehicles at a higher price point, while the Gray Death Legion pack has four 'Mechs at a lower cost. More miniatures can mean more painting and storage, but also more tactical options. Decide if you prefer quantity and variety or a smaller, focused lance.
- Lore and Aesthetics: The Gray Death Legion pack has a strong narrative hook with its famous unit history, appealing to lore enthusiasts. The Rifle & Command Lances pack is more generic, but its vehicles are iconic Inner Sphere designs that fit any faction. If storytelling matters, the Gray Death Legion pack adds character; if you want generic tools, the vehicle pack is versatile.
